Dear Chicago...

....when I finally made my way over to the corner of the studio that his photographs adorned, my feet completely froze. I couldn't move. I was stunned as I looked up and saw a portrait that he captured of me while we were at the top of Stone Mountain.  The caption read:  "The Queen #thisisromance"
* * *
After about an hour of taking pictures and sharing laughs with his guests, I excused myself and told him I would be right back. I carefully walked up the swirly metal staircase and headed straight for the black leather stools. To be honest, my feet were killing me in those black patent-leather Louboutins. I needed to rest for a few minutes.
I sat down and pulled my shoes half-way off, just barely letting my heels hang out of the pump. The DJ was spinning Common and Nas's "Ghetto Dreams". "We got our own handshake.. Pretty with her eyes low.. Lookin' all tribal.. Hear BeyoncĂ© song and she gotta sing along.." I bopped my head as I sang along with Comm…

When Church Just Isn't Doing It for You...

This morning, Bae and I tried to watch church online.. but we just couldn't quite get into it. So, we logged on to YouTube and began listening to some Abraham Hicks. We listened to about 3 different audio messages until we decided we were spiritually full
Many of the messages were about the law of attraction, how to believe everything works out, and starting everyday with a new appreciation and zeal for life. We began to talk about the things that resonated most within our hearts. This discussion went on for quite a while and eventually led us to creating our own set of daily affirmations.
Our first step was to make a list of I-statements like the ones below. Then, we completed each sentence together.
Step 1:
1.I appreciate
2.I love
3.I believe
4.I will
5.I can
6.I know
7.I am
8.I bring
9.I give
10.I gain
11.I support
12.I seek
13.I accept
14.I have

Step 2:
1.I appreciate life and all of its blessings
2.I love being able to redirect my thoughts
3.I believe time is on my side
4.I will…

Subtle the Sun

12:45 am heaven.
I don't like the things they say about me behind my back... but that's life. when you're doing well, people will always be watching and talking. sad to say but most don't say things from a place of love and kindness, most want to see you fail. Especially when you are attempting to master something that they don't have the confidence to try.
no matter who you are, when you're living in your purpose, whether in the public eye or behind closed doors.. you'll always be scrutinized.
find the beauty within that and take it as a compliment.
it's crazy because here I was, thinking no one pays me any mind.. had no idea that I was so important .. important enough to be the topic of people's discussions, when I'm not around.
But I was raised on tough love. Ironically, hate does nothing but gas me.. I'll be honest. At first it hurts me. Makes me feel lonely, misunderstood. But after I reflect on the ordeal, it humbles me. Lights a …

Autumn Advice

Dear Reader, This is Just a Reminder

"Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." - Albert Einstien
Here's what happens: We take things so personally, that we forget to realize that who ever is hurting us, may only be doing it because of something that's internally afflicting the person who is causing us to feel hurt. Remember: Nothing that anyone else does is about us. We must not let someone else's anger bring us down. Energy is contagious. Protect yourself from the negative.
You may be asking how.. How do we guard our spirits from negative vibes?
All we have to do is make a list of the negative things that are happening in our lives. Once a person is totally aware of these things, subconsciously, the brain will guide their spirit far away from it all. Awareness is key.
Here's my list:
Dwelling on negative things  Doubt of potential  Dishonesty Inconsistency
Now what's ironic is, the same things I don't want in my life, are things that I actially bring u…

You only hear what you are ready to hear.

You Are the Common Denominator

If you feel as if everything is going wrong in your life, ask yourself: What am I doing to add to this? Are you gossiping about people instead of worrying about yourself? Are you finding solutions or are you still doing the same ol' things? Are you waiting for someone else to make a change for you?
The point is, we are the common denominator in our lives. You have to stop and reflect on yourself, in order to find a resolution. You are the only person that is in your way.

Sometimes I feel so weird  And misunderstood  I wish  I wish I could have a constant  peace of mind
I meditate.  I pray. I cry.  I write.  I feel.
I listen to the voice within.
And nothing changes Theres no escaping this  frustrating antitheses
I still harbor so much pain  And doubt  And fear
But the crazy thing is... I always  push though it I fight myself  And I find at least one thing  one.single.thing. Each day. . . To make me smile  To be grateful for  And to love
You see, What I realize is: With joy,  Comes pain.  Its impossible for the flowers  to flourish  without the rain
Cliche cliche That last stanza  is one of the most over used  and unoriginal lines ever  Still yet that doesn't change its  undeniable validity

It's Not About You, It's NEVER About You.

"Don't take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering." -Ruiz

Holy Hats!

Bae stole one of my favorite hats and it looks better on him than it does on me! I guess it should since I snagged it from the men's sections of Value Village on York Road in Baltimore.
But anyways, after 4 hours of reading and writing this morning, I decided to scroll through my instagram feed and I noticed how amazing my friends have been looking in their hats too! I stole their pictures for this post. I'm sure my readers will appreciate a little inspiration for their own crowns!  ***
@thetwentiesgal Rocking a vintage mustard pill-box hat from the 1950s! We found this gem at the Eastern Market in DC, an outdoors flea market for just about anything from furniture to fresh flowers.

@ttttoni_ It's the simple touch of this Homburg hat that brings this entire denim fit together. Love this look because it quick, easy, and affordable.
@br00klynbetty What better way to rock your big hair than with a bigger hat? The rich wine color of this cowboy hat meshes perfectly with the low blue…

Spread your wings.  I'm sure you're afraid  because you've fallen  and failed before.  Don't  let  what  you  think  you  can't  do  defeat  you.  Start over!  Reflect on what made you  fail the first time devise a new plan and start all over again.  Come back  better than ever.  Remaining consistently true to your purpose  Align your passions with your heart  and happiness.  Quill your fears.  Wake up and fly.

Dear Reader, You Are Not Alone

sometimes people seem really happy on the outside but they are very hurt and depressed inside. truth is: most of us are so busy wallowing and worry about our own funk that we don't even notice anyone else not being their usual selves. take this day to check on your loved ones ... even if just to say,
"hi, you're not alone. you are loved by many. you have so many things to be proud of. dwell on your light and have faith that your darkness will not last much longer. this is just a part of your journey. you will stand strong again. you are not broken you are simply in a stage of shedding things or people from your life that you no longer need. do not confuse readjusting with being broken. believe in the promise of your struggle.. believe that it's only going to prepare you for the rewards that lie ahead of you. nothing worth having comes easy, the harder the fight, the greater the victory!"
We all go through tough times. And eventually,  we get through them.. But it&…

Morning Meditation: Transcending Peace

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds... -Philippians 4:6-7

*** Meditate specifically on: The peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
The word transcends means to go beyond ..God's peace goes way, way beyond what we as humans are able to comprehend.
But He does NOT need us to understand His Peace in order for him to bless us with it.
As you walk today, remember that all of your needs shall be met because of the grace and mercy of The Lord. It doesn't matter who you are or what you've done in the past.
Let your heart be filled with His peace and let your mind be at ease. Be comfortable, not stressed ..because whatever your problem is - it is not too hard for God to fix. He's allowing you to go through it for your benefit. Regardless of how hard it is, how alone you feel, how fa…

Gemini: Mood Swings that are Faster Than the Hardest Rain Drops

Sometimes, I don't know, how to feel.
Should I be grateful our should I complain about whatever I lack?
Should I cry or should I rejoice and be glad all of the time
I don't know.
I heard it's all about having a healthy balance of good and bad.. But I only want the good... that's not realistic though.

Pre-Analysis of the Behaviors that I Contribute to the Culture of MyClassroom

“Well, you might be surprised or dismayed by the most interesting finding: the best teachers are remarkably good at describing in fine detail what happens in their classroom even as they teach and move an agenda forward.” -Lee Schulman I was recently tasked with reading a blog post titled, "A veteran teacher turned coach shadows 2 students for 2 days - a sobering lesson learned", by Grant Wiggins, the co-author of Understanding Design.

I can honestly say that many of the things that the coach observed are not things that occur in my classroom - or in my school for that matter. I am proud of that. We are not traditional teachers who expect our students to "sit down, be quiet, and pay attention" for an entire period. What we expect is for them to grapple with new ideas, ask deep questions, and engage in rich discussions that lead to authentic learning. But this quote about what she would do differently if she could go back in time and redo her 17 years as a classroom …

practicing kindness, with people who are phony

My biggest challenge is practicing kindness, with people who are phony as sh't. I just want to tell them how I really feel but instead, I know it's better to smile it off. No one is worth the emotions that come with taking me out of character. I will not let anyone get the best of me.
I make it sound so simple to do this whole "practicing kindness" thing. Well, it's not. Which is why I have put strategic tools in my everyday practices to help me with sticking to this.
The first is, I never address an issue as soon as it happens. I take my time and think about how I want to respond. No one said you have to jump at something or someone as soon as something happens. Take your time, process the process.
The second thing I do, is reflect on what I may have done to add to the issue. I mean because nine times our of ten, things didn't just happen on their own. I'm sure I added to whatever the problem is, whether my role in it all was big or small - I have to own…

Everything Always Comes Full Circle

Last night, I had a small tea-night gathering and the conversations got very deep. After everyone headed home, a young lady said to me right before she left, "I have to be honest with you. There was a time when your happiness and motivational stuff started to annoy the hell out of me. Then, a few months later I read one of your posts and it really inspired me. I even started writing again because of you. It's funny because when I think about how much I used to hate seeing your happy ass posts, I realize, there was something inside of me that just wasn't where I wanted to be. I didn't like who I was and the mental space that I was in. It didn't have a thing to do with you."
I was about I write a list of morals to this story but I have decided to let you gather what you want from it.

9:23 AM

1. Whatever you do, do YOUR VERSION of it.

2. Let go of expectations of others, hold yourself accountable for what you want to be and where you want to go.
3. Don't depend on anyone else to get better at being you.
4. We only exist, truly exist, when we let go of all layers that have covered our hearts. Shed, heal, grow, repeat.
5. You don't have to take every piece of advice that is offered to you. Gather the words that you find value in and leave the rest.
6. Run toward your struggle. Allow yourself to feel the emotions that you are afraid of. The only way to conquer is to confront
7. Be creative. Don't let what you don't have stop you. Find new ways to fill your spirit with joy.
8. Resting is not the same thing as stopping. Take a break. Your soul will thank you by being even stronger than ever before.
9. We all have a light within us that was purposefully placed there to shine and reflect on others. Don't be selfish with yours.
10. Your story is the on…

Today I’m flying low and I’m not saying a word. I’m letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep. The world goes on as it must, the bees in the garden rumbling a little, the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten. And so forth. But I’m taking the day off. Quiet as a feather. I hardly move though really I’m traveling a terrific distance. Stillness.   One of the doors into the temple. - Mary Oliver
